Chrono-Shards of Aethelgard
Every shard of time holds a kingdom. She has three left, and one enemy who will burn them all.
Chapter 1 · Inception
The first time she heard the words, they arrived in the shape of a breath — small, warm, impossibly close. 'Every shard of time holds a kingdom. She has three left, and one enemy who will burn them all.' The city outside her window pulsed with its usual complaint, traffic and neon and the hum of a thousand ordinary lives, but inside her apartment the silence had a weight to it now, as though something had entered and closed the door behind itself. She rose from her chair slowly, the way you do when you already know you are being watched. The mirror on the far wall showed only the room and her, and yet she could feel a second gaze layered over her own, patient, curious, ancient. She spoke into the quiet and asked the only question that mattered: what do you want from me?
Chapter 2 · The Threshold
By morning the answer had begun to write itself into the margins of her life. Coffee cups left symbols in their rings. Streetlights blinked in patterns that felt like sentences. She started to keep a notebook, because forgetting felt dangerous. On the third day, a stranger sat down across from her at the café and told her, without preamble, that she had crossed a line she could not uncross. He was not unkind about it. He simply laid the terms out, one by one, the way a surgeon might explain a procedure that had already begun. And when he left, he left the notebook open to a page she had not written.
Chapter 3 · The Bargain
To read on, you must first choose a name for the thing that is watching you. That was what the page said, and beneath it, waiting, was a single blank line. She held the pen for a very long time. Every name she considered felt too small, or too old, or too much like a confession. When at last she wrote a single word — hers, no one else's — the lights in the apartment dimmed once, in acknowledgement, and something in the shape of an answer began to move toward her from a very great distance.
Chapter 4 · The Unbinding
The story does not end here — but this is where the price is paid. In the final hours before dawn she walked out of her apartment carrying nothing at all, and the city she had lived in for a decade parted around her as if it had been waiting for her to leave. She understood, at last, what she had bargained for: not power, not knowledge, but a door. And on the far side of that door, someone was ready to greet her by the name she had chosen. She did not look back. There was nothing there anymore to look back at.
